When to give your Dog Treats
While dog treats can be great for not only training your dog, but also strengthening the bond between you, it is important to not overdo it. Just as you would not eat candy in excess, dog treats should be given in moderation.
The ideal times to give dog treats include:
- Training: Dog treats are a great way to reinforce good behavior. “By rewarding dogs with a treat when they obey a command, they learn to associate good behavior with something nice – a process known as positive reinforcement,” according to Purina. “You’ll find that treats with a strong, tasty smell are especially effective.”
- Separation Anxiety: Treats can help a dog better cope with being alone. Instead of being upset that you are leaving, your dog will rejoice if he knows he will be receiving a delicious treat.
- Healthy Alternatives: While you may have traditionally fed your dog table scraps, this is not the healthiest of treats for your dog. Instead, give him a few dog treats while you are at the table. It is the healthy alternative to table scraps.
Remember to adjust your dog’s diet accordingly. “When you do treat, always reduce your dog’s main meal by an equivalent calorific amount and feed according to manufacturer’s directions, advises Purina.
