What’s So Special About Caramel Apples?

Try one of our specialty caramel apples!

The leaves are falling from the trees in bursts of yellow and orange. Hot cocoa flows steadily, scarves are tied tightly, and department stores are beginning to crank up the most joyful of Christmas songs. We’re well into autumn here in Maryland, and that means that some of our favorite seasonal treats are finally on display. At Wockenfuss, we carry an endless supply of caramel apples year round – but what is it about those salty sweet fruits that keep us coming back for more?

They Weren’t Invented Until the 1950s

Caramel apples were invented many years after the candy apple by a Kraft Foods employee, Dan Walker. Much like other great inventions, it was the result of an accident, when Mr. Walker was experimenting with leftover holiday candy. Vito Raimondi of Chicago, Illinois made and patented the first automated caramel apple machine in 1960.

We Just Missed National Caramel Apple Day

Caramel Apple day, celebrated nationally on October 31, celebrates the tasty treat. Kids and adults alike enjoy a caramel apple from the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream waters!

An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away

Apples are considered one of the world’s healthiest foods. Let’s face it, our kids can be picky eaters sometimes. A caramel apple is not only a delicious reward; it’s a wonderful way for people, young and old, to receive the nutritional benefits of apples. Apples are a good source of fiber, including both soluble and insoluble pectins, and it’s also a good source of vitamin C. Apple nutrients are disproportionately present in the skin, making it a particularly valuable part of the fruit.
