The History of Candy Corn

Every Halloween, Americans eat their fair share of candy corn – more than 35 million pounds to be exact. Wow! That’s about nine billion pieces of candy or roughly 27 individual candy corns for EVERY American. That’s a lot of candy corn. So you have to wonder…how did we get to this point? Where did candy corn come from and how did it become so popular?

Halloween isn’t Halloween without Candy Corn!

According to tradition, the origins of this delicious candy can be traced back to Philadelphia candymaker George Renninger, who is credited with the invention of candy corn in the 1880s. However, back then it wasn’t known as candy corn. When the Goelitz Confectionery Company – now Jelly Belly Candy Co. – brought this Halloween staple to the masses in the 20th century, it was called “Chicken Feed.” The candy’s slogan: “something worth crowing for.”

More Fun Facts: Did you know there is a National Candy Corn Day? That’s right. The day before Halloween – October 30th – is dedicated to your favorite tri-colored treat: candy corn!
