The History of Candy Corn, Everyone’s Favorite Halloween Candy

The History of Candy CornWhen you think about Halloween, what comes to mind: Ghosts, Goblins, Costumes, Decorations, or maybe Halloween Candy? While all are acceptable answers, nothing says Halloween quite like candy. It is what we openly crave as young children and what we secretly (and sometimes not so secretly) long for as adults. And Halloween is the one time a year when it is completely acceptable to gorge yourself on as much candy as you can.

We got to thinking; what’s your favorite Halloween candy? If you answered Candy Corn, you are not alone. After all, who doesn’t love candy corn? It is a Halloween staple. Candy corn is to Halloween what the Easter egg is to Easter. But where did Candy corn come from?

The History of Candy Corn, Everyone’s Favorite Halloween Candy

The history of candy corn can be traced back more than a century to the 1880s, when Philadelphia candymaker George Renninger first invented the tri-color treat, originally called “Chicken Feed.” However, it was not until the 20th century that candy corn would be available to the masses. And the world would be forever changed. In fact, candy corn is so popular nowadays that the Halloween delicacy is now available year round.

According to the National Confectioners Association, more than 35 million pounds of candy corn will be produced this year. To put that figure into perspective, that is about nine billion pieces of candy.
