A Philadelphia research group may have just figured out why some people crave sweets more than others. Those with a “sweet tooth” are constantly craving sweet, sugary goodness, while others tend to judge them. Society generally frowns upon those who thought to be eating too much sugar. It’s also a widely held belief that children’s access to sugary foods will dull their perception of sweet flavors and make them want more. So what does science have to say about all of this?
When we taste things that we really like, it triggers a release of dopamine in our brains. Dopamine is basically a chemical in our brains that makes us happy. So, when you eat a really yummy dinner and follow it up with your favorite Wockenfuss candy for dessert, dopamine is released in your brain and you feel happy.
So, is a “Sweet Tooth” a Real Thing?
Actually, yes, it turns out that some people really do have what is called a “sweet tooth”, but it’s not for the reasons that a lot of people think. Our genetic make-up is composed of bits of DNA that dictate all sorts of things, like appearance and attitude. Those genes also dictate how our senses perceive things we see, smell, hear, feel, and taste. Just like poor eyesight is genetic, so is a slightly dulled sense of taste. So those who have a sweet tooth aren’t necessarily addicted to sugar, they just can’t taste it as strongly as others. That’s not to say that people can’t be addicted to sugar and crave it all the time, but sometimes it really is just genetics!
