How to Make the Perfect S’more

Freshly toasted smores with large white marshmallows.

What could be better than the union of chocolate, graham crackers, and marshmallow?

National S’mores Day is August 10th. What could be better than the union of chocolate, graham crackers, and marshmallow?  It’s unknown who the true creator of the s’more was, but the first recipes for this treat appeared in 1927, where the excited fans requested “some more” and it simply became “s’more” – once you eat one, you call out “s’more!” It’s easy to make these classic campfire treats.

Over A Fire

If you want to make your s’mores using a fire, the first thing you’ll want to do is start your fire. Your fire can be from a grill, a campfire, or even your fireplace if you want to make one indoors. Carefully consider what you use to fuel the fire, since that can affect the taste of the marshmallow.

If you want to make your s’mores outdoors, make sure you have all the proper fire precautions accounted for. For instance, keep a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher on hand.  If it’s windy outside, it’s probably not a good idea to use a fire to make your s’mores. Break apart the graham cracker and put some chocolate on the cracker. Toast the marshmallow over the fire and add it to the cracker and chocolate.

Using an Oven

Did you know you can bake your s’mores? You can even broil them, if you wish. Start by pre-heating your oven. Baking takes a bit longer, but there’s less chance you will burn the marshmallow. What you will want to do next is put the chocolate, cracker, and marshmallow together, chocolate on half of the cracker and the marshmallow on the other. Bake for three to five minutes, or broil for up to a minute. Remove from the oven, serve, and enjoy!

In a Microwave

Lastly, you can also make s’mores using your microwave. If you want to make your s’more this way, think about putting a dry paper towel on the plate underneath the s’more. Adding the paper towel will help keep the graham cracker from turning soggy and crumbling from any moisture. Microwave the marshmallow and graham cracker for ten to twelve seconds. Put the chocolate and graham cracker together, serve, and enjoy!

If you feel like getting creative, you can customize your s’more by adding some fruit, or using a different flavor of chocolate. You could also use marshmallow fluff or chocolate spread instead of traditional marshmallows and chocolate. Or you could even try exchanging the chocolate for a different type of candy entirely.
