Lose Weight without Losing Those Sweets

Lose Weight without Losing Those Sweets2014 is quickly coming to an end, and you know what that means: New Year’s resolutions. This is the time of year when people vow to eat better, get in shape, and lose weight. So you ditch the sweets and hit the gym. Two weeks later, you have ditched the gym and hit the sweets. It’s just so hard to say no to those delicious chocolates, creamy fudge, and yummy caramel goodies. But what if you didn’t have to lose the sweets to lose those unwanted pounds?

Lose Weight without Losing Those Sweets

While candies, chocolates, and other sweets tend to be high in calories, that doesn’t mean you have to ditch them altogether to lose a few pounds. In fact, cutting sweets out of your diet completely could spell disaster, especially if you have a particularly vivacious sweet tooth. The trick is to combine exercise with better eating habits.

Everything in Moderation

You don’t have to lose those sweets completely. You just have to limit the amount of sweets you eat. You can’t eat chocolates and caramel all the time, but it’s perfectly healthy to enjoy a few gummi bears or licorice twists from time to time. Just make sure “a few” doesn’t turn into a few handfuls.

“Everyone should allow themselves a daily treat because there is no reason why a 100- or 200-calorie snack can’t fit into a healthy diet” says nutrition expert Sarah-Jane Bedwell, RD.

Limit Temptations

They say variety is the spice of life, but it is also the biggest pitfall of any good diet. The more temptations you have in your home, the easier it is to give in and stray from your diet.

“Kids and adults gravitate to treats, so limit what you bring into the house to reduce temptation,” advises Elizabeth Ward, MS, RD.

Restrict the treats in your home to only a few of your favorites. Your cabinet shouldn’t look like the candy aisle at your local grocery store.

Be Smart

Whether you prefer dessert after dinner or an afternoon treat, sweets can be part of a balanced diet…as long as you pay attention to frequency and portion size. Remember, everything in moderation.
