Happy National Caramel Day!

Caramel comes to us in many forms. From sauces to candies, cookies to toppings — the gooey treat delights taste buds of all ages. April 5 is National Caramel Day, and Wockenfuss has the perfect selection for the celebration! Read on to explore a few of our fun caramel facts.

Simplicity is Delicious

Essentially, caramel is sugar that has been melted and browned. The ingredients vary depending on whether the caramel is hard, gooey, or soft, but two ingredients remain king: milk and sugar.

It’s Been Enjoyed for Centuries

The first recorded type of caramels were hard candies that date back to the 17th century. Early American settlers cooked sugar and water together to make quick treats for their children. The ingredients were simple and affordable, making caramel a staple in many early households.

The Apple Was an Accident

The famous caramel apple was created by Kraft Foods employee Dan Walker by accident. Supposedly he was experimenting with leftover Halloween inventory, melting the caramels together and incorporating different fruits.

Wockenfuss keeps the spirit of experimentation alive with our wide selection of caramel apples!

The World’s Biggest Caramel Corn Ball

In 2015, Cosmos Creations of Junction City, Kansas, constructed the world’s biggest caramel corn ball. Weighing in at 6,780 pounds, the corn ball equaled the weight of two and a half small vehicles. It took the crew about a month to build, and they proudly named it “Carl.”

Chemists Love It

The ingredients of caramel may be few, but the science behind it is complex! Caramelization is the removal of water from a sugar, proceeding to isomerization and polymerization of the sugars into various high-molecular-weight compounds. How’s that for a mouthful?
