The History of Mother’s Day Gift
The Mother’s Day we all know and love was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908. It became an official United States holiday six years later. However, this day of maternal commemoration traces its history back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. Both civilizations would hold festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. The early Christians also had a festival known as “Mothering Sunday,” which fell on the fourth Sunday in Lent.
Today, Mother’s Day is not only a time to celebrate that special lady in your life – your mother – it is also one of the biggest holidays for consumer spending. For many, this means presenting their mothers with gifts, such as flowers and, of course, chocolate!
