The History of Chocolate Bunnies

According to Smithsonian magazine, chocolate bunnies originated in Germany in the 19th century. These tasty Easter candy treats were hidden for young children to find. It was not until 1890, however, that these chocolate bunnies made their way to America. Robert Strohecker used a five-foot-tall chocolate bunny as an Easter promotion in his drug store.  But it was not until the 20th century that these chocolate treats became an Easter tradition.

Today, Americans buy more than 60 million chocolate bunnies each year.

Why are some Chocolate Bunnies Hollow?

During World War II, cocoa was rationed along with many other foods and materials. As a result, candy makers began to make their chocolate bunnies hollow as a way of conserving materials while keeping the traditional shape everyone had already come to love.
