Where did the name Easter come from?

Despite being a holiday so rooted in religious history, the origins of the term Easter are actually unknown. But there are several theories. Some believe the term is derived from Eostre, a Teutonic goddess of spring and fertility. Other believe Easter can be traced to the Latin term hebdomada alba, meaning white week. Because of a translation error, the phrase appeared as esostarum in Old High German, which later became Easter.

No matter where the name came from, one thing is certain; Easter sure is a sweet holiday…literally! And Wockenfuss is here to make sure it stays that way!

The History of Chocolate Bunnies

According to Smithsonian magazine, chocolate bunnies originated in Germany in the 19th century. These tasty Easter candy treats were hidden for young children to find. It was not until 1890, however, that these chocolate bunnies made their way to America. Robert Strohecker used a five-foot-tall chocolate bunny as an Easter promotion in his drug store.  But it was not until the 20th century that these chocolate treats became an Easter tradition.

Today, Americans buy more than 60 million chocolate bunnies each year.

Why are some Chocolate Bunnies Hollow?

During World War II, cocoa was rationed along with many other foods and materials. As a result, candy makers began to make their chocolate bunnies hollow as a way of conserving materials while keeping the traditional shape everyone had already come to love.

But why do we fill baskets with candy every Easter Sunday? Where did this delicious tradition come from?

The History of the Easter Basket

On Easter morning, there is nothing like running downstairs to see what Easter candy that magical bunny left in your basket. But where did this tradition come from? You may be surprised to learn that the Easter basket has its roots in pagan history.

Traditionally, it was customary for people to fill baskets with early seedlings as an offering to Eostre, the fertility goddess. It was thought that these offerings would lead to a good, bountiful harvest. According to some stories, Eostre even carried a basket of eggs. Sound familiar?

The history of the Easter basket, as we know it, originated in Germany. According to German folklore, the Easter hare would leave baskets filled with Easter candy and brightly colored eggs for the children.

Over time, as the Christian church began to evolve, Christian customs began to replace or blend the old Pagan customs, like the Easter basket. So that’s why we fill those baskets with our favorite candy every Easter Sunday. Click Here to browse Wockenfuss’ wide selection of Easter candy.
